An interest of mine is surprising people with a camera in the face. None of these people really look like this as they are moving in real life, only when frozen in time. I love all of these people dearly.

The Past, etc . . . part 2 Go Time

I’ve become addicted to videos on you tube called “Rig Rundown” that are posted by http://www.premierguitar.com and feature well known guitarists (and some lesser well known guitarists) talking about their guitar “rigs” (equipment). I especially love the videos featuring J. Mascis, Nels Cline, King Buzzo and Judah Bauer.
A few weeks ago, as I was scrolling through the “Rig Rundown” thumbnails on you tube, I noticed a video by a band called the Go Times playing live recently in Chicago.
Now, this is where the past comes in.
In the mid 1990’s I played guitar in a band called Gila Bend and near the end of the troubled, tedious existence of this band we traveled to Peoria, IL to play a show. The three things I remember from this day is that we listened to the band RODAN over and over again the whole way there ( guitarist Mike H was always in charge of the tape deck), there was a teenage girl at this show wearing a black leather jacket with the word CUNT spray painted in big silver letters on the back (Our bassist Fred Popolo joked the whole way back to Chicago about “CUNT” going home after the show and her parents, reading the paper in the living room, saying to her ” Hi CUNT! How was the punk rock show?” to which she responds “FUCK YOU MOM!”) and a great hardcore band called The Go Times that also played that night.
So I’m thinking “wow, they’re still together” and I watched the video.
It quickly became apparent to me that this was not the same band. The band in the video were middle-ageish guys playing garage rock with twangy vocals and it wasn’t bad, I liked it. Then I thought “maybe this is the same band, I’m middle aged and I no longer play music that sounds like Gila Bend. Let’s investigate!”
I found this website
http://www.gotimeband.com
This was the band in the video and they were called Go TIME! not the Go Times. I read the bands bio and realized that I used to be in a band with the guy on the right side of the screen in High School! Two bands in fact. The first two bands I was ever in!
I always like to use a line from one of my heroes, Mike Watt, when describing these two bands. We had a sound that “made your asshole pucker from a mile away”.
This former band mate of mine is named Scott Niekelski and he (back then at least) was an evil genius of a kid. He caused all kinds of trouble and never got busted and he inspired other kids to cause even more trouble. He sold black shoelaces as “death bracelets” to kids at his high school and had kids at MY high school doing the same. He had a “death bracelet” pyramid scheme! We stopped hanging out around the age of 18 when girls began to enter the picture. Why does that always happen?
Anywho, here’s another example of the serendipitous, path crossing nature of the internet covering the entire past history of the human being. Starting from now. No, NOW! NO NOW! etc, etc, etc …
and I get to watch my childhood buddy play music from afar. I’m also happy to report that we have both improved greatly at playing and writing rock songs.
Go Scott Go!

A gun to my head and a twist of my arm

So, I’ve finished a new recording and it’s called “Eric Kmiec presents Eric Kmiec”. The title is lifted from a great Charles Mingus record called “Charles Mingus presents Charles Mingus”(which, by the way you should all listen to.).
If you look a few posts back in this here blog you’ll see a post called “the past, etc… ” where I tell of the happenings of a band called the Ass Clown and one of it’s internet experiences that had led me to re-think the meaning of life. Because of this I decided that THIS TIME I was going to put this new record on the internet for free any way that I could. I started opening accounts and creating things and uploading songs and videos etc, etc . . . and learned that some of these music websites work better than others and some badger you for money the entire time and that I have to figure out how to connect them all  . . . but they don’t wanna be connected and this takes a lot of time. Time that I usually spend breathing air and drinking water plus I had my niece Olivia’s baptism at some horrible contemporary church with their awful half baked songs (I prefer the traditional Hymns – I’m baptized Presbyterian, but I’m Presbyterianish ever since I read the Tao Te Ching. That Yin/Yang thing makes SOOOO much sense – and don’t even get me started on the Catholics. . . that’s a joke, you see, in Taoist philosophy there is no judgement, things just are . . . never mind) and pastor who seemed to be some sort of Bill Engvall tribute act. “I baptize you in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit . . . here’s your sign.”
At some churches I cry my eyes out with joy but this place . . . nothin’.
I also needed to mow my lawn badly.
All of this was on my mind as I try to figure out if my mp3’s are the right sample rate and why my photos were all upside down.
What all of these music sites also insisted on was that I connect everything to Facebook. The problem was, I’m not on Facebook. I was a proud hold out. Not ME! I’m gonna breath air and drink water and mow my lawn and NOT be on Facebook!
But they insisted.
“Facebook! Facebook! Facebook! Come on! Link this with Facebook! Join Facebook! Facebook! Facebook! Your friends are on Facebook! Facebook! Facebook! Facebook!”

AAAAHHHGGGHHHHGGG!!!!!! then I remembered the Ass Clown thing . . . OK! DAMN IT I’ll join Facebook!
So.
I’m on Facebook and it’s been okay. It’s kind of strange having those instant message conversations with three people at the same time while they also comment on your page. Which do I respond to first?
At least people get to hear my new songs.
The winner of the music websites by the way is www.soundcloud.com It seems to be the easiest to use and is also the least insulting. Plus I found some really cool stuff on there.

Hopefully all of these links work if you are interested. There’s free downloads on all of em’.

The Harpy by Todd Petersen

I was the knob twiddler (my slang for recording engineer) on my friend Todd Petersens cd AUTODDONOMY. This track is my personal favorite because it was a one take performance, which are always the best. Todd is a good friend and a sweet man but is a ruthless taskmaster as a record producer.
